For our second RB5X we tapped five of the best pro surfers from Santa Cruz, California, and headed to Mainland Mexico—land of heavy top-to-bottom beach breaks and reeling points.

Adam “Hagar” Replogle 32
Santa Cruz, Calif.

Replogle was groomed to be a competitive surfer from a very young age and quickly muscled his way up the ranks from NSSA to the pros. Today, he’s one of the most powerful and stylish surfers ever to come out of Santa Cruz. His nickname comes from the sound made by his initials A.R.—get it? “Hagar.”

Shawn “Barney” Barron 30
Santa Cruz, Calif.

Nothing describes Barney better than “class clown.” He’s equally one in the water and on land. As an aerial specialist, Barney has probably invented more moves than any other surfer. He goes big every time regularly trying to nail moves like barrel rolls and back flips.

Darryl “Flea” Virtrosko 31
Santa Cruz, Calif.

Flea is fearless. He’s well known for charging huge Maverick’s and is without a doubt one of the gnarliest members of the Santa Cruz crew. Besides being a respected big wave rider, Flea is also masterful in smaller high-performance surf.

Peter “Condor” Mel 33
Santa Cruz, Calif.

A fixture at big wave breaks like Maverick’s, Peter continues to break new ground with tow-in surfing, riding some of the planet’s largest waves. He grew up in his dad’s Freeline Surf Shop and still works there today. The nickname “Condor” comes from his large wingspan—Pete’s a tall guy.

Anthony “The Ledge” Ruffo 39
Santa Cruz, Calif.

This guy has more nicknames than anyone: Big Daddy, Surfo, Da’ Mayor, and The Ledge—as in a living legend. Ruffo has surfed professionally for the past 24 years and he still rips harder than most surfers half his age.
